Step 1

Register an account

This one is pretty easy. Just click here to register an account, write down your username and password and then come back here.

Download a client

There are many free clients available.

The goal of Gajim is to provide a full featured and easy to use Jabber/XMPP client. Gajim works nicely with GNOME, but does not require it to run. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

ChatSecure is a free and open source messaging app that features OTR encryption over XMPP. You can connect to your existing Google accounts or create new accounts on public XMPP servers (including via Tor), or even connect to your own server for extra security.

Step 3

Set up your account

No matter which client you use, all you're going to need is your username (i.e. something@jabberchat.org) and your password (that you used when registering the account).

Put those in and you're good to go.

Step 4

Add your buddies

Add any buddies in you want just by using their jabberchat address and you're good to go with secure chat.
