In just a few quick steps you'll be up and running

Step 1

This one is pretty easy. Just click here to register an account, write down your username and password and then come back here.

Step 2

Download a client

There are many free clients available.

There's a list here:

But we can also reccomend a few:

Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to AIM, XMPP (Jabber), ICQ, IRC and more

The goal of Gajim is to provide a full featured and easy to use Jabber/XMPP client. Gajim works nicely with GNOME, but does not require it to run. It is released under the GNU General Public License.

ChatSecure is a free and open source messaging app that features OTR encryption over XMPP. You can connect to your existing Google accounts or create new accounts on public XMPP servers (including via Tor), or even connect to your own server for extra security.

A free and open source Jabber/XMPP client for Android. Easy to use, reliable, battery friendly. With built-in support for images, group chats and e2e encryption.

Step 3

Set up your account

No matter which client you use, all you're going to need is your username (i.e. and your password (that you used when registering the account).

Put those in and you're good to go.

Step 4

Add your buddies

Add any buddies in you want just by using their jabberchat address and you're good to go with secure chat.
